Propose a solo or group exhibition at Red Space:

Please email your CV, artist’s statement, and proposal along with 5-10 images that clearly represent your work as a whole. Be sure to include your contact information (if you have a website where your work and CV can be viewed, a link will suffice instead of emailing your information and images.) All documents and images must be attachments, send to redspaceaustin@gmail.com Artists selected for exhibition will be chosen by Caitlin G. McCollom unless there is a juried exhibition or guest curator.

The space is 10 feet by 10 feet (a cube) with a sliding door closet on one wall and a small 3×4 window on the opposite wall of the closet. We can put up auxiliary walls if you need the closet and window covered. The ceiling is 8 feet high. The floor is wood laminate.

Proposal format:

Your proposal should briefly detail what your exhibition would be, including the medium of your work, and any special circumstances (for example, if your work requires a lot of technology, is extremely messy, loud, or bloody I need to know.) Your proposal should also include a concise concept statement.

Red Space Gallery is pleased to present an opening reception for Nicholas Hay and his exhibition entitled War After Rock and Roll. In War After Rock And Roll, Nicholas Hay questions whether the consciousness of our popular culture has recently begun to place less emphasis on negative aspects of authority in favor of some sense of safety that might be provided as a result of obedience. Has the quest for social justice met a happy conclusion or been sidetracked by fear? The reception will take place from 7-10pm on July 16th, 2011.

Using the landscape of The Icarian Sea and the figurative notion of demise – this project explores the myth of the fall of Icarus through experimental photography, installation and video.

 About the work:

The “perfect” lawn has been a trend in America since the 1940′s. Designing lawns has become a normal symbol of status and an aesthetic “necessity” to a great percentage of our society; between 50 and 70 percent of residential water goes toward landscaping— primarily to water lawns that stretch almost 30 million acres across the US alone. Every year, the typical homeowner averages 40 hours a year mowing the lawn, and keeping up a finished lawn requires vast amounts of natural material such as oil and water, and the use of chemicals. By dramatizing the act of maintaining a trimmed, green, well-watered lawn through a series of illogical performances, Holloway challenges the human fixation on perfecting the natural at the cost of our resources, time and energy.

Be Es Un Paisaje Bonito (It Is A Beautiful Landscape) in an installation made of children’s art that has been re-worked to form an abstract topographical landscape.  The art was collected over the past year, during which I have been working with a youth outreach program that provides arts programming to under-served communities. This piece is a nod to the way in which these kids will eventually change the landscape of the world that we live in, and to the wonderful power of using one’s imagination.
